ABC Waste of Savannah has joined forces with Feed The Hungry in an effort to combat poverty by hosting a gas giveaway at Chu’s Market on Saturday, March 20th 2021 at 9:00 AM and will run until supplies are depleted.
This event is one of many throughout March in observation of poverty relief. This comes after Savannah City Council passed the 2021 budget with increased focus on specific initiatives within the community.
The 2021 budget lists six policy priority areas; poverty, income inequality, violent crimes, including homicides and gun offenses, affordable housing, blight eradication, as well as research, measurement and citizen engagement. The city of Savannah will be working in 2021 to address these focus areas through new and existing programs and partnerships similar to our sponsorship of Feed The Hungry Gas Giveaway.
When a family’s income fails to meet a federally established threshold (specific dollar amounts that determine poverty status) the family is considered to be living in poverty. According to the Savannah Government Website, more than 30,000 people in Savannah, including 9,706 children, live in poverty. Several neighborhoods and census tracts have had high rates of poverty for generations.
At ABC Waste our goal for this event is to provide less fortunate residents with a helping hand especially during a time that we are experiencing rising prices of gasoline. We love this initiative because a tank of gas is a simple but impactful way with the potential to change someone’s day, week, or life. A tank of gas could get an individual to a job interview, eliminate the necessity to make a sacrifice between transportation and dinner, provide a parent the special opportunity to give their child a birthday present, or even pay a utility bill that has been lingering over their heads.
We are expecting a big turn out, so arrive promptly by 9 AM to ensure a spot in line! Free fuel provided on a first come, first served basis while supplies last. No external containers like buckets, jars or tubs allowed — just straight up fuel into your car! No purchase necessary.
